On the afternoon of June 29, 2017, in Newark, New Jersey, Malcolm Gardner, a 26-year-old man from the city, was shot on the 300 block of Hawthorne Avenue in the South Ward. Reports place the gunfire at around 2:40 p.m., turning a late June day into a crime scene that would leave his family and neighborhood in mourning.
