In the early morning hours of September 11, 2018, a resident of East Orange, New Jersey, Cory M. Munford, a 40-year-old Black male, was found fatally wounded in Newark's West Ward. The incident unfolded around 7:27 a.m. when Newark police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Sanford and Finlay Place following a report of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Munford inside a car, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response and the efforts of medical personnel who arrived at the scene, his injuries proved to be too severe. Cory Munford was pronounced dead at 7:45 a.m.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with detectives from the Newark Police Department, launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward to assist with the case. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation remains active and ongoing as law enforcement continues to seek answers in the death of Cory Munford.
