On April 30, 2023, 46-year-old Newark resident Al-Tariq "Ninesense" Johnson was fatally shot outside 899 18th Avenue near Columbia Street in the city's Vailsburg section. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., when a gunman opened fire, targeting several individuals. Johnson died at the scene, marking Newark's 15th homicide of 2023. Two other men were wounded in the shooting and were treated in the intensive care unit at University Hospital.
