In the early hours of an April morning in 2019, the life of 47-year-old Niles L. Mayo was cut short by violence on a Newark street. At approximately 2:27 a.m. on April 9th, a fatal event unfolded in the 700 block of 20th Street that would leave a family and community searching for answers. Niles was shot in an incident that prompted an immediate response from law enforcement.
Emergency services arrived at the scene and transported him to University Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, Niles was pronounced dead at 3:06 a.m. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in collaboration with the Newark Public Safety Department, quickly launched an investigation into the shooting, treating it as a homicide.
In the years that have followed, the investigation into Niles Mayo's death has remained active and ongoing. However, no arrests have been made in connection with his murder, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Authorities have continued to urge anyone with information to come forward, but the case has grown cold, leaving a lingering sense of unresolved justice for a man remembered by friends by the nickname 'L Dogg.'
