In the summer of 2020, a young Black man named Tyree R. Quinones had his life cut short at the age of 22. On the warm evening of Sunday, July 12th, gunfire erupted on the 100 block of Sunset Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. First responders rushed to the scene around 10:30 p.m. to find Quinones suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to University Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but tragically, he was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of Monday, July 13, 2020.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with detectives from the Newark Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. For months, the case remained active as authorities worked to piece together the events that led to Quinones's untimely death. The community was left searching for answers, and law enforcement diligently pursued leads to bring a suspect to justice.
No immediate arrests were made, leaving a sense of uncertainty hanging over the neighborhood where the young man lost his life.
A significant breakthrough in the investigation came on October 1, 2020, when authorities announced the arrest of 32-year-old Al-Muqtadir Padgett, a resident of Newark. The diligent work of the task force led them to identify Padgett as the alleged perpetrator. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Tyree R. Quinones, as well as unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Padgett was taken into custody and is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility as the legal proceedings against him move forward, marking a crucial step towards justice for Quinones and his grieving family.
