In the early hours of a Sunday in December 2016, the West Ward of Newark was disturbed by the sound of gunfire that would ultimately claim the life of 19-year-old Shahire Williamson. The shooting occurred on North Munn Avenue, near the Bradley Court Housing complex, leaving another man critically injured and a community searching for answers.
Police responded to numerous calls reporting shots fired in the area just after midnight. Arriving at the scene, they found two male victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to University Hospital, where Shahire Williamson was pronounced dead a short time later. The second victim, a 24-year-old man, was admitted in critical condition.
Williamson was a resident of nearby Irvington.
In the days following the incident, law enforcement officials confirmed that they were actively investigating the double shooting. However, they did not immediately release any information about a potential motive or any suspects.
