In the early moments of a Tuesday morning in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 25-year-old Janell Johnson was tragically cut short. On August 7, 2018, just after midnight, gunfire erupted in the 900 block of Franklin Avenue within the Stephen Crane Village Housing Complex. Responders rushed to the scene to find Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound.
She was swiftly transported to University Hospital in a desperate attempt to save her life.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, Janell Johnson, a resident of nearby Belleville, was pronounced dead at 12:54 a.m. The promising future of a young woman was extinguished in an act of violence that sent ripples of grief and fear through the community.
