On November 29, 2018, Janet Cowart, a 64-year-old female, died in her Newark, New Jersey home. The incident that led to her death occurred at approximately 5:21 p.m., and she was pronounced dead at the scene less than half an hour later. An autopsy was pending to determine the official cause of death.
Authorities quickly identified a suspect in Cowart's death, leading to the arrest of her 38-year-old son, Al Andre Cowart. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is handling the investigation into what they have described as a domestic violence incident.
Al Andre Cowart was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including murder, unlawful possession of a handgun,
possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a knife, and possession of a knife for an unlawful purpose. He is currently being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark. At the time of this incident, it was reported that he had a previous arrest in April 2017 for weapons offenses, resisting arrest, and eluding police.
