A promising life was tragically cut short on November 5, 2016, when 23-year-old Syasia McBurroughs, a female college student with aspirations of becoming a teacher, was murdered in a Newark, New Jersey home. McBurroughs was visiting the home when a man, later identified as Jeremy Arrington, forced his way inside, armed with a gun. The ensuing rampage was reportedly triggered by a Facebook post one of the victims had shared, alerting others that Arrington was wanted for a previous crime.
Inside the residence, Arrington restrained the occupants and attacked them with kitchen knives. During the assault, McBurroughs was fatally shot. The brutal attack also claimed the lives of two children, 8-year-old Aerial Little Whitehurst and her 11-year-old brother, Al-Jahon Whitehurst, who were both stabbed to death. Three other individuals, a 29-year-old woman and two 13-year-old twins, were also stabbed but survived the attack. A young girl with autism who was present managed to escape and call for help, which alerted the police.
The day after the murders, Jeremy Arrington was located barricaded inside another Newark apartment and was arrested following a standoff. He was subsequently charged with three counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, burglary, criminal restraint, and several weapons offenses. In March 2022, a jury found Arrington guilty on all charges. He was later sentenced to 375 years in prison for what the judge described as one of the most 'horrific, heinous, cruel, and depraved' crimes the county had ever witnessed.
