A promising life was tragically cut short on November 5, 2016, when 23-year-old Syasia McBurroughs, a female college student with aspirations of becoming a teacher, was murdered in a Newark, New Jersey home. McBurroughs was visiting the home when a man, later identified as Jeremy Arrington, forced his way inside, armed with a gun. The ensuing rampage was reportedly triggered by a Facebook post one of the victims had shared, alerting others that Arrington was wanted for a previous crime.
