In the winter of 2018, a burst of gunfire shattered the evening calm on a Newark street, tragically ending the life of 53-year-old Maryann Matthews. On the night of Friday, December 21st, police were called to the 40s block of Brunswick Street around 7:10 p.m. following reports of shots being fired.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a woman, later identified as Maryann Matthews, suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. Emergency medical services rushed her to University Hospital, but despite their life-saving efforts, she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office immediately launched an active investigation into the fatal
shooting. In the days following the incident, it was stated that the investigation was still in its early stages and the motive for the shooting was not yet known. Information regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the death of Maryann Matthews has not been made publicly available.
