On a cold December evening in Camden, New Jersey, tragedy struck, forever altering the lives of those connected to Darrell Matthews. It was the day after Christmas in 2020 when the 46-year-old man was found inside an apartment on the 1200 block of Chestnut Street with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest. The call came in around 8 p.m., and though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, his life could not be saved.
In the days that followed, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office diligently
pursued the case. Their investigation led them to a suspect, 41-year-old Frederic Boyd, a resident of Camden. Surveillance footage from the area proved to be a critical piece of evidence, capturing Boyd leaving the apartment shortly after the shooting. This footage also tracked him to a nearby area where a gun was later discovered.
The relentless work of law enforcement culminated in the apprehension of Boyd. He was located in Mount Holly, Burlington County, by the Camden Division of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and taken into custody. Boyd was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and various weapons offenses. While an arrest has been made, the motive behind the tragic shooting remains undisclosed as the case proceeds through the legal system. Boyd is currently being held at the Camden County Correctional Facility, awaiting a pretrial detention hearing.
