In the early evening of April 25, 2021, a dispute that began a day prior culminated in the tragic death of 45-year-old Raaseon Adams. A male resident of Paterson, New Jersey, Adams was confronted in front of his home on Summer Street. The situation escalated when a gunman, later identified by authorities, approached him and fired at close range, striking him in the head and neck.
Police arrived at the scene around 6:51 p.m.
to find Adams lying on the sidewalk with apparent gunshot wounds. He was rushed to St. Joseph's University Medical Center in a desperate attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved too severe. Shortly after arrival, at 7:10 p.m., Raaseon Adams was pronounced dead. His death marked the fourth homicide in just a few blocks of that neighborhood since the previous fall.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. Authorities alleged that the fatal encounter stemmed from a verbal argument between Adams and another Paterson man the day before, which had escalated into a physical fight. The suspect reportedly fled the scene on foot immediately after the shooting.
A multi-agency effort involving the United States Marshal's Fugitive Task Force, the Passaic County Sheriff's Department, and the Paterson Police Department led to the apprehension of the suspect. The alleged shooter, 21-year-old Kamar Isom, was located at a residence in the nearby town of Elmwood Park and was arrested without incident. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and several weapons offenses. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of 30 years to life in prison.
