In the early morning hours of a June day in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 23-year-old Tyzier White was tragically cut short. The young man, a resident of nearby Irvington, was in the area of Campbell Street and University Avenue when a dispute turned fatal. An interaction outside a local lounge involving White, another man, and that man's cousin, reportedly left the other man feeling slighted. This perceived insult led to an act of sudden and brutal violence.
White was shot five times at point-blank range. First responders rushed him to University Hospital, but his injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead at 12:50 a.m. on June 1, 2021.
For a short time, the case remained unsolved, with authorities from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Police Department jointly investigating the homicide. They appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. The break in the case came on June 16, 2021, when law enforcement arrested Isaiah J. Knight, a 31-year-old from East Orange. The investigation had been aided by two eyewitnesses who not only provided sworn statements identifying Knight as the shooter but also selected his photograph from a photo array.
The subsequent legal proceedings revealed a chilling plot that extended far beyond the initial shooting. While incarcerated and awaiting trial, Knight orchestrated a desperate and elaborate scheme to silence one of the key eyewitnesses against him. This conspiracy involved his sister, cousin, and girlfriend. In one instance, a female associate lured the witness to a residence where two masked men, at gunpoint, attempted to force him to sign a false affidavit recanting his statement. The intimidation tactics didn't stop there; the witness and his family were subjected to threatening text messages, and his police statement was twisted into a rap video about 'snitches' that was circulated on social media.
The efforts to derail justice ultimately failed. In April 2025, an Essex County jury found Isaiah J. Knight guilty of first-degree murder, multiple weapons offenses, and conspiracy to commit witness tampering. His accomplices in the intimidation plot were also arrested, with their cases pending. Two months later, Knight was sentenced to a total of 125 years in prison for the murder and the subsequent attempts to cover it up, ensuring he would face the consequences for the shooting that ended Tyzier White's life and the campaign of fear he waged from behind bars.
