In the early hours of the day after Christmas in 2017, a tragedy unfolded in Newport News, Virginia, shattering the holiday peace. Miacah Archells Cooper, a 44-year-old Black/African American male, was fatally shot on December 26, 2017. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. at the Christopher Crossing Apartments located in the 500 block of Logan Place.
Cooper was inside an apartment, sitting in the living room near a rear sliding glass door, when an unknown assailant fired
multiple shots from outside the building. The bullets shattered a window adorned with Christmas decorations, striking Cooper multiple times. His girlfriend, who was upstairs at the time, heard the gunshots and came down to find him gravely wounded. Emergency services were called, but Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene.
The community was left in shock by the violent act, with neighbors expressing their sorrow and fear. Those who knew him remembered Cooper as a friendly and affectionate person.
