Eighteen-year-old Ahlayah Bowens, a male resident of the city, was on Hoffman Boulevard on June 20, 2021, when he was shot at approximately 9:10 p.m. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 11:24 p.m. that same night.
The incident occurred on Father's Day, a detail that added another layer of tragedy to the event.
Ahlayah was a student at Fresh Start Academy at the time of his passing. His obituary paints a picture of a vibrant young man with a passion for both the arts and athletics. He had been a vocal major at Cicely L. Tyson's Elementary & Middle School of Performing and Fine Arts and had also attended East Orange Campus High. He was active in his community, playing baseball with the South Ward Newark Eagles and football with the Orange Hurricanes and the South Ward Bulldogs. He also played basketball for Hart Middle & Cicely L. Tyson's teams. He was described as a jovial person with a goofy personality who could brighten anyone's day.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with the East Orange Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for Ahlayah's death. However, in the days following the shooting, no arrests were made, and no suspects were publicly identified. The investigation was reported as active and ongoing as law enforcement continued to seek answers in the untimely death of the teenager.
