In a heart-wrenching incident in East Orange, New Jersey, 4-year-old Christopher Spruill, a young male, lost his life on Saturday, June 25, 2016. The tragedy unfolded inside his family's home when his older brother, who was 5 years old at the time, found a handgun belonging to their mother and accidentally fired it, striking Christopher in the head. The young boy was rushed to a hospital in Newark but succumbed to his injuries later that day.
The boys' mother, 22-year-old Itiyanah Spruill, was present in the home when the shooting occurred. She was subsequently arrested that same night and faced charges of endangering the welfare of a child and a weapons violation. Authorities stated that the gun used in the accidental shooting belonged to Ms.
Spruill, though it was not immediately clear how the older child managed to gain access to the weapon.
During her initial court appearance, a distraught Itiyanah Spruill pleaded not guilty to the charges. She was held on $310,000 bail. In a later development, she pleaded guilty to child endangerment charges and was sentenced to a year in prison, receiving credit for time already served. The community rallied around the grieving family, with a local church stepping in to cover the funeral costs for young Christopher. The older brother was placed in the care of his grandmother.
