In the crisp autumn afternoon of October 3, 2022, just as the school day ended, 16-year-old Letrell Duncan’s life was tragically cut short on the streets of East Orange, New Jersey. A sophomore at East Orange Campus High School and a rising basketball star, he was walking home around 3:15 p.m. when he was fatally shot multiple times near the intersection of Lincoln Street and Park Avenue.
He was rushed to University Hospital in Newark but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The brazen daylight shooting sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an intensive investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. In the weeks that followed, authorities pieced together the events leading to the senseless act of violence. Surveillance footage played a crucial role, capturing a blue Honda Civic with noticeable rear driver's side damage in the vicinity moments before the shooting. The video showed a passenger, clad in a black ski mask, light-colored pants, and a black coat with a gray hood, exit the vehicle, head toward the scene of the shooting, and then run back before the car sped away. The Honda, which had been reported stolen from West Orange two days prior to the shooting, was recovered in Newark the day after.
The investigation led to the arrests of two individuals. Josiah Wade, 22, was identified as the driver of the stolen vehicle and was subsequently charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. A 16-year-old male, whose name was not released due to his age, was also taken into custody. He was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and two weapons offenses. Authorities believe the juvenile was the one who fired the shots that killed Duncan. Family members have stated that Letrell did not know his assailants, leaving a painful void and unanswered questions about the motive behind his killing.
