In the spring of 2016, a life was tragically cut short in East Orange, New Jersey. Isaiah T. Peterson, a 27-year-old Black / African American male from the neighboring community of South Orange, was fatally shot on the evening of Thursday, April 21, 2016. The incident occurred around 7:19 p.m. in the vicinity of McKay Avenue and Ayr Street. Despite being rushed to University Hospital, Peterson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:59 p.m.
The investigation into the
shooting was a joint effort between the East Orange Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Their work led to the identification of two suspects in connection with the homicide. Jhamid Love, 26, and Isaiah Jackson, 22, were subsequently charged with two counts of murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The charges against Love and Jackson were part of a larger investigation into a series of homicides in Essex County that had plagued communities in East Orange and Newark. At the time the charges were announced, Isaiah Jackson was already incarcerated in the Union County Jail on unrelated charges. Jhamid Love, however, was not in custody and was considered a fugitive. The arrests brought a measure of hope for justice to a community shaken by the violence.
