On a summer morning in Camden, New Jersey, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of the 1100 block of Baring Street. When police responded to a ShotSpotter alert at approximately 9:45 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 2021, they discovered 31-year-old Darrell Lopez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that another man, aged 50, had also been shot during the incident. He arrived at a nearby hospital on his own and was treated for his injuries. While the circumstances surrounding the second victim's involvement were not publicly detailed, his survival provided another layer to the unfolding investigation.
Authorities, including the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Camden County Metro Police, utilized video surveillance
footage and information gathered at the scene to identify a suspect. This led them to 21-year-old Nasir Aaron of Swedesboro. On the following Wednesday, the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Aaron in Paulsboro. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Darrell Lopez and was held at the Camden County Correctional Facility to await a pre-trial detention hearing.
