In the warm midnight air of the Fourth of July, 2021, a neighborhood celebration on Montrose Terrace in Irvington, New Jersey, was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Amid the intermittent crackle of fireworks, 38-year-old Malik McCallister, a Black male, was fatally shot. The sudden violence also claimed the life of his older brother, 42-year-old Tarik R. Barnes.
The brothers, who resided together in nearby Rahway, were both pronounced dead in the early hours of July 5th at separate local hospitals.
McCallister was rushed to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m. His brother, Tarik, succumbed to his injuries at University Hospital in Newark at 2:09 a.m. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the Irvington Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the double slaying that cut short the lives of two siblings.
In the weeks that followed the tragic shooting, the investigation continued, but no arrests were immediately made. By late August of that year, authorities sought the public's help, with the Essex County Sheriff's Crime Stoppers Program offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murders of Malik McCallister and his brother. Despite the ongoing investigation and the offered reward, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or identified suspects in the case. The circumstances surrounding the shooting and the motive behind it remain part of an active and unresolved investigation.
