In the late afternoon of a Sunday in August, the city of Newark was rattled by a burst of violence that claimed the life of a 36-year-old man. Tony Madison, a resident of Newark, was found inside a vehicle on the 400 block of Avon Avenue, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. The initial call reporting the shooting came from the 700 block of South 18th Street on August 15, 2021.
Responding to the report, Newark police officers began an investigation that led them to the discovery of
Madison's vehicle and his body a short distance away. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:23 p.m. Another man was also wounded in the shooting, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with the Newark Police Department, took charge of the investigation into the shooting.
