In the winter of 2017, the community of Newark, New Jersey, was shaken by the tragic death of Richard Culver, a 23-year-old Black male. On December 2nd, Culver was discovered in Vailsburg Park, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The discovery prompted an immediate and thorough investigation by local law enforcement.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, in a collaborative effort with the FBI Fugitives Task Force, dedicated resources to unraveling the circumstances that led to
Culver's untimely death. Their investigation pointed them toward a suspect, another Newark resident. More than a month after the incident, their efforts culminated in a significant development in the case.
On January 10, 2018, authorities apprehended 30-year-old Anthony M. Brown of Newark. Brown was taken into custody and faced a series of serious charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Following his arrest, he was processed and transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark. At the time of his arrest, law enforcement officials stated that the investigation remained active and ongoing as they continued to piece together the events that transpired.
