In the pre-dawn hours of August 23, 2021, the life of Yanquai Marlik Edwards, a 25-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short on the streets of Trenton, New Jersey. At approximately 3:45 a.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the quiet of Fountain Avenue, prompting a response from Trenton police who were alerted by a ShotSpotter activation. Upon their arrival, they discovered Edwards suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office has been spearheading the investigation into what was ruled a homicide. In the time that has passed since the fatal shooting, authorities have been working to piece together the events that led to Edwards's death. However, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Law enforcement officials have made public appeals for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward to help bring those responsible to justice.
A lifelong resident of Trenton, Yanquai, affectionately known as 'Quai,' was a graduate of Trenton Central High School and was employed as a stock person at a local Shop-Rite. His death marked another instance of gun violence in the city, leaving behind a grieving family, including his young son, and a community calling for an end to such senseless acts. The investigation into his murder remains ongoing as detectives continue to seek leads that may solve the case.
