On a summer evening in Trenton, New Jersey, tragedy struck when 23-year-old Naquan Ellis, a Black male, was shot and killed. The incident occurred on June 24, 2014, in the vicinity of Fairway Drive, where police responded to reports of a shooting in progress around 10:45 p.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Ellis in a parking lot with a gunshot wound to his chest.
He was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead a short time later. Another victim, a female, was also found at the scene with gunshot wounds to her leg and hand and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
The investigation into Naquan Ellis's death was carried out by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, Grady A. Blue III, a 22-year-old from Trenton. An arrest warrant was issued, and Blue was taken into custody the following evening by members of the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force. At the time of his arrest for the homicide, Blue was already incarcerated at the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility on unrelated charges. His bail for the murder charge was set at $1 million.
In February 2015, a Mercer County grand jury indicted Grady A. Blue III on multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and several weapons offenses in connection with the shooting that claimed Naquan Ellis's life and injured the female victim. The legal proceedings that followed saw prosecutors offer Blue a plea deal. In a significant development, Blue accepted a deal and pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated manslaughter for recklessly firing into the crowd of people that included Ellis. He also pleaded guilty to an unrelated gun charge. This plea agreement came after an initial offer that would have carried a much longer sentence for a murder conviction. Blue admitted to the shooting but did not provide a motive or specify his intended target.
