In the early evening of March 15, 2022, the life of Albert L. Barnes, a 46-year-old male, was tragically cut short on the streets of his lifelong home, Trenton, New Jersey. Around 6 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in the first block of Camden Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Barnes lying on the sidewalk, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.
He was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the death of Albert Barnes was a collaborative effort between the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and the Trenton Police Department. Their work led them to a suspect, 43-year-old Leroy McKnight, also a resident of Trenton. On April 12, 2022, members of the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested McKnight in Trenton.
Following his arrest, Leroy McKnight was charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, and certain persons not to possess a weapon. The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office filed a motion to detain McKnight pending his trial. Albert Barnes, born on July 23, 1975, was remembered by his family and friends as someone who enjoyed cooking and watching sports. He leaves behind his wife and children.
