On a summer evening in Trenton, New Jersey, the life of 16-year-old RayQuan Marquise Brown was tragically cut short. A Black male, Brown was the victim of a fatal shooting on June 1, 2014. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the 800 block of Stuyvesant Avenue, where police found him lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his head. Another 26-year-old male was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound to the groin.
Both victims were transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where Brown was pronounced dead.
In the days following the shooting, Brown's family remembered him as a “gentle giant” who was a tenth-grade student at the Delaware Valley School. They shared that he had a passion for riding dirt bikes, music, and basketball. His grandmother recalled picking him up from work just hours before the shooting, sharing a final shopping trip and a conversation. His mother expressed that in the weeks leading up to his death, Brown had voiced concerns about his safety in Trenton, feeling that the city was no longer a safe place for him.
The Mercer County Homicide Task Force immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. At the time, law enforcement officials had not identified any suspects or a motive for the killing. They appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest in the case. Despite the ongoing investigation and the passage of time, publicly available information and news reports have not indicated that any arrests have been made in connection with the murder of RayQuan Marquise Brown. The case remains a painful and unresolved chapter for his family and the Trenton community, a stark reminder of the city's ongoing struggle with gun violence.
