In the late morning hours of a December day in Trenton, New Jersey, the life of 44-year-old Michael Jones was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire. On December 27, 2024, at approximately 11:30 a.m., police responded to a ShotSpotter activation that detected more than 20 rounds fired on the 300 block of West Hanover Street. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered Jones in the driver's seat of his black Mercedes sedan, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in critical condition and, after going into cardiac arrest multiple times, succumbed to his injuries the following day, December 28, 2024. An affidavit of probable cause later revealed Jones sustained two gunshot wounds to the left side of his skull and one to each side of his neck.
The investigation into the shooting was a collaborative effort involving the Mercer County Homicide Task Force, the Trenton Shooting Response Team, and the New Jersey State Police. Their work quickly led to the identification of a suspect, Najir Tripp, a 29-year-old resident of Trenton. Security footage from the area captured a man, later identified as Tripp, removing a handgun and firing multiple rounds into Jones's vehicle, even assuming a 'shooting stance' with both hands on the weapon. A Trenton Police officer was able to identify Tripp from this video evidence. Remarkably, it was discovered that Tripp was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of the fatal shooting.
Just two days after the incident, on December 29, 2024, authorities executed a search warrant at Tripp's residence in Trenton, where he was taken into custody. He now faces a string of serious charges, including first-degree murder, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree certain persons not to possess a weapon. Following his arrest, the prosecutor's office announced its intention to file a motion to detain Tripp pending his trial. While an arrest has been made, authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the shooting.
