In the early evening of August 25, 2022, a sense of unease settled over the Newark neighborhood near 19th and Avon Avenue. At approximately 6:35 p.m., the sharp retort of gunfire shattered the late summer calm, prompting a flurry of 911 calls. When police arrived at the scene, an area known for loitering and gang activity, they discovered 25-year-old Elijah Byrd suffering from multiple bullet wounds.
