In the afternoon hours of November 8, 2022, on the 900 block of South Orange Avenue in Newark, New Jersey, a report of a shooting prompted a police response. Upon their arrival at approximately 2:40 p.m., officers discovered a man who had sustained a gunshot wound. The injured male was identified as 23-year-old Nyshon Anthony, a Black resident of Newark. Emergency services transported Anthony to University Hospital for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead the following day at 2:07 p.m.
The investigation into the death of Nyshon Anthony, an aspiring rap artist also known by the name 'GunHead,' was conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force. The investigation revealed that the fatal shooting was the culmination of a feud between rival street gangs in Newark. Anthony was associated with the GBlock gang, which is connected to the Grape Street Crips. The conflict escalated through a series of threatening and disrespectful music videos and songs exchanged between Anthony and a rival rapper. This pattern of antagonism is believed to have led to the violent encounter on South Orange Avenue.
In connection with the murder of Nyshon Anthony, two individuals were arrested and are facing serious charges. The suspects were identified as Tyler Shorter, 19, also known as 'Money Bags,' and Amir Canty, 20, known as 'Blast,' both from Newark. Authorities have stated that Shorter and Canty are members of the Sex, Money, Murder street gang. It is alleged that on the day of the incident, Shorter, with assistance from Canty, shot and killed Anthony. Both men have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, murder in aid of racketeering, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. These charges carry the potential for a mandatory life sentence. The investigation leading to the arrests was a collaborative effort involving the FBI, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force, and the Newark Police Department.
