In a Newark, New Jersey, apartment on a cold Saturday night, the life of 23-year-old Ashley Jones was brought to a violent and tragic end. On January 30, 2016, Jones and a man she had recently started seeing, 28-year-old Jarrell Marshall, were fatally shot inside her Clinton Place home. The senseless act was made all the more harrowing by the presence of three small children within the apartment, ages one, three, and four, who were fortunately unharmed.
Two of the children were the young sons of Jones and her ex-boyfriend.
Neighbors were left stunned by the deadly shooting, with some recalling recent and ominous troubles between Jones and an ex-boyfriend. One neighbor reported seeing Jones with a black eye just the week before, shaken and scared after a frightening argument. Jones had allegedly secured a restraining order against him, but her fear for her safety remained palpable to those who saw her in the days leading up to the tragedy. The violence that shattered the evening quiet of the neighborhood left a makeshift memorial of candles as the only testament to the lives suddenly taken.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of 27-year-old Jeffrey Holland of East Orange, Jones's former boyfriend. Authorities charged Holland with the murders of both Ashley Jones and Jarrell Marshall. The case against Holland grew even darker when he was also charged with the murder of another former girlfriend, 21-year-old Tiniquah Rouse, who had been killed the day before Jones and Marshall. Rouse was found strangled and drowned in her bathtub, and her five-month-old baby was discovered unharmed in a closet.
In December 2018, an Essex County jury convicted Jeffrey Holland on 18 counts, including three counts of murder, burglary, and child endangerment. During the trial, Holland testified that Rouse's death was an accident and denied his involvement in the shooting deaths of Jones and Marshall. In February 2019, a judge sentenced Holland to 190 years in New Jersey State Prison for his crimes, which the judge described as among the 'most depraved, heinous and cruel' he had ever presided over. The sentence ensured that the man responsible for the brutal deaths of three people would spend the rest of his life behind bars.
