In the early evening of May 28, 2023, tragedy struck in a West Ward neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey. Siddiq Amin Hooper, a 44-year-old Black male, was in the area of Plymouth Street and South Munn Avenue when gunfire erupted around 6:30 p.m. When police arrived at the scene, they found Hooper suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite emergency medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene less than half an hour later.
Another man was also struck by the gunfire. He was transported to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. The identity of this second victim has not been publicly released by authorities.
The shooting cast a somber shadow over the Memorial Day weekend, leaving the community in shock and raising concerns about the ongoing issue of gun violence in the city.
In the wake of the deadly shooting, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force launched an investigation into the incident. Law enforcement officials have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for Hooper's death. However, to date, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities continue to seek justice for Siddiq Amin Hooper and his family.
