In the early evening of September 2, 2022, the relative peace that had settled over Trenton, New Jersey for 93 days was shattered by gunfire. On the 200 block of Spring Street, 35-year-old Rasheed Barlow, a Black male, was fatally shot. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 p.m., also left another man, aged 38, with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg. Trenton police were alerted to the shooting by a Shot Spotter activation and several calls from concerned citizens.
Upon their arrival, they discovered both victims. Barlow was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter.
The Mercer County Homicide Task Force and the Trenton Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the city's thirteenth homicide of the year. Their efforts led them to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. This culminated in the arrest of 42-year-old Anthony Smith of Trenton.
Smith was apprehended in Hackensack, New Jersey, by the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force. He now faces a string of serious charges, including murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Following his arrest, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office filed a motion to have Smith detained pending his trial.
