In the evening hours of September 14, 2022, a dispute on a Newark street corner turned deadly, leaving a 50-year-old Irvington man, Kyle Eley, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The fatal encounter unfolded at approximately 7:02 p.m. at the intersection of South Orange and Munn avenues. Responding Newark police officers discovered Eley at the scene, having been shot.
He was quickly transported to University Hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead at 7:26 p.m.
The investigation into the male victim's death moved forward, and authorities later announced the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect in connection with the fatal shooting. Due to the suspect's age, his identity has not been publicly released. He is currently being held at a juvenile detention center.
Further details emerged suggesting the shooting may have stemmed from a disagreement over money. According to some reports, Eley was armed with a golf club when he went to confront the teenager. Eley's girlfriend reportedly heard the gunshots shortly after he went outside to speak with the juvenile. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is continuing to investigate the incident.
