On the evening of May 3, 2023, the life of 8-year-old Zahmire Lopez, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a burst of violence within his Newark, New Jersey home. A vibrant and energetic child known for his love of sports, music, and dance, Zahmire was remembered by his football coach as a talented boy with a bright future. That evening, however, his Johnson Avenue residence became the scene of a horrific shooting that would claim three lives.
The alleged assailant was identified as 29-year-old Everett Rand, the boyfriend of Zahmire's mother. In what was described as a drug-fueled incident, Rand forcibly took Zahmire from his mother's arms and shot the young boy in the chest. In a desperate act of survival, Zahmire's mother escaped by jumping from a second-story window.
The violence inside the home also resulted in the death of 27-year-old Wyleek Shaw and left 24-year-old Tajion Simmons with non-fatal injuries.
Responding to a 911 call around 8:34 p.m., Newark police officers arrived to a chaotic scene. They discovered Zahmire and the two adult male victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Zahmire was rushed to University Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at 9:14 p.m. As officers arrived, they witnessed Rand fleeing the residence and attempting to discard a semi-automatic handgun with a large capacity magazine into a nearby dumpster.
A foot pursuit immediately ensued, during which Rand was fatally shot by two Newark Police Officers, Steven Ferreira and Ryan Castro. A handgun that did not belong to law enforcement was recovered near Rand's body. The investigation into the deadly encounter is ongoing, as is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. In the wake of the tragedy, the Newark community came together to mourn the loss of a child who was described as the 'life of the party,' holding a vigil in his honor.
