In the early hours of a Tuesday morning, just after midnight on July 22, 2025, the life of 33-year-old Michael Howard of Newark, New Jersey, was brought to a violent end. Howard, a male, was inside his white Chrysler 300 on the 300 block of Avon Avenue when gunfire erupted. Responding to reports of the shooting, Newark police officers discovered Howard in his vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders rushed him to University Hospital in a desperate attempt to
save his life, but his injuries proved to be too severe. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators from the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force, who are leading the active and ongoing investigation, later revealed the brutal nature of the attack, confirming that the gunman had fired 23 shots at Howard.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the fatal shooting. Authorities have not released any information about a potential suspect or suspects, and the motive for the shooting remains unclear. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and contact their tip line to assist in the investigation.
