In the late afternoon of a Thursday in Newark's West Ward, chaos erupted as a barrage of bullets shattered the September air. When the sounds of gunfire subsided, 21-year-old Hassan Smith, a male, lay grievously wounded. The incident unfolded just before 2:05 p.m. on September 6, 2018, in the 200 block of 14th Avenue, alarmingly close to an elementary school and a daycare center.
