In the summer of 2018, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon calm on a Newark street, tragically ending the life of 58-year-old Craig Dorrah. On August 2nd, at approximately 2 p.m., police responded to the vicinity of Crane Street where they discovered Dorrah had been shot. He was a kind, gentle, and soft-spoken man with a loving heart, known by many who worked at or visited 2 Cedar Street.
The investigation into the shooting led detectives to identify a 16-year-old male as the
alleged shooter. The teenager, whose name was not publicly released due to his age, was subsequently arrested and faced serious charges, including murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Following his arrest, the juvenile was held at the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center in Newark.
In the wake of the arrest, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced their intention to review the case to determine if the teenage suspect would be tried as an adult. The incident left a community to grapple with the violent loss of a beloved individual and the unsettling reality of youth involvement in such a serious crime.
