On a cold February day in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, a routine call for a domestic dispute turned into a tragedy that would claim the life of a dedicated police officer. Thirty-two-year-old Officer Sean Leonard Sluganski, a man known for his humor and love for his family, was shot and killed on February 6, 2023, while responding to a call on Wilson Street. The male individual at the center of the disturbance was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis.
Officer Sluganski and his partner, Officer Chuck Thomas, encountered the subject near Versailles Avenue. As they attempted to speak with him, the man, identified as 31-year-old Jonathan Jemia Morris, suddenly pulled out a handgun and opened fire on the two officers. Both officers were struck by the gunfire. Officer Sluganski was fatally wounded and succumbed to his injuries at UPMC McKeesport. Officer Thomas was also critically injured in the exchange.
Following the shooting, Morris fled the scene but was located a short time later at the intersection of Versailles and Patterson. It was there that he engaged in another exchange of gunfire with a third officer before being shot and taken into custody. Morris was known to the McKeesport Police from previous incidents. He was subsequently charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. Officer Sluganski had served with the McKeesport Police Department for two years and had previously been with the Charleroi Regional Police Department. He left behind a fiancée and a one-year-old daughter.
