In the early morning hours of June 26, 2013, a violent home invasion in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, claimed the life of 24-year-old Brian Cook. The male victim was at his Versailles Avenue home with his girlfriend, Stephanie Pavlovic, and their one-year-old son when an intruder broke in around 5:30 a.m. Cook was fatally shot in the head while he and Pavlovic were in bed.
Pavlovic sustained a gunshot wound to her hand but survived the attack; the child was unharmed.
The investigation quickly led police to a suspect, 19-year-old Talon Michael Perozich of White Oak. Authorities alleged that the motive for the deadly home invasion was a dispute over a small debt, reported to be between $200 and $230, possibly for marijuana. Perozich was arrested and subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including criminal homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and firearms violations. According to police statements, the assailant kicked down the couple's bedroom door and fired multiple shotgun blasts into the dark room.
Talon Perozich's case went to trial, where he faced the possibility of the death penalty. A key witness for the prosecution, an acquaintance of Perozich, testified that he had accompanied Perozich to Cook's home to collect a drug debt but claimed he remained in the hallway when the shots were fired. However, the defense challenged the credibility of witnesses, including Pavlovic, who could not definitively identify the shooter's face. After deliberating for eight hours in October 2015, the jury acquitted Perozich on all charges. Jurors later indicated that they found the evidence presented by the prosecution to be insufficient and the witnesses not credible enough to secure a conviction, despite some believing Perozich may have been involved in some capacity.
