In the late hours of a Monday evening in April 2017, tragedy struck in a third-floor hallway of a Ridgewood Avenue apartment building in Newark, New Jersey. Gunshots shattered the night, leaving a 26-year-old man, Maurice Fate, with a fatal wound to the head. The violent encounter also left a woman in her early forties injured, though her wounds were not life-threatening.
