On a Tuesday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the life of 30-year-old Christopher J. Moore, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On September 14, 2021, Moore was outside a beauty store near Vel Phillips Avenue and North Avenue, engaged in selling items from the trunk of his car. It was around 4:00 p.m. when a vehicle pulled into the parking lot and parked behind the building in an alley.
From the vehicle, a man and a woman emerged.
The man, identified as Carlos Davis, approached Christopher Moore. As the two interacted, the woman, Tia Meta, moved along the side of the building. The situation quickly escalated when Davis attacked Moore, wrestling a firearm away from him. Davis then handed the gun to Meta, who fired the weapon, fatally wounding Moore. In the chaotic moments that followed, both Davis and Meta fled the scene, running back to their waiting vehicle and speeding away. The brazen afternoon shooting left the community shaken and searching for answers.
The investigation into Christopher Moore's death led Milwaukee police to a breakthrough within days. Police located a vehicle connected to the suspects and subsequently arrested both Carlos Davis and Tia Meta. The motive behind the violent encounter was revealed to be an act of retaliation. According to statements made to the police, Meta believed that Moore had sexually assaulted her in the week leading up to the shooting. She and Davis reportedly went to confront Moore with the intention of engaging in a physical altercation.
Days after the shooting, family and friends of Christopher Moore gathered for a vigil to remember a man they felt was taken from them unjustly. As they mourned, the legal process against the two individuals accused in his death began to unfold. Four days after the incident, prosecutors formally charged Carlos Davis. Nearly two years later, in September 2023, Tia Meta was also charged in connection with the fatal shooting.
