On a tragic day in Detroit, Michigan, the life of 22-year-old Joyce Marie Driver Burgan was cut short. On December 3, 1964, Joyce, a female, was found deceased in her home. The grim discovery was made after her husband, 28-year-old James D. Burgan, contacted her sister and confessed to a horrific series of events that had unfolded within the residence.
The catalyst for the violence was reportedly James's anger over Joyce having recently left him.
In a devastating act of domestic violence, James used a. 22 caliber rifle to fatally shoot Joyce. He did not stop there, turning the weapon on their four children as well as a friend of Joyce's who was in the home at the time, Mrs. Billi Gene Nolan. The children who tragically lost their lives were Joyce's two children from a previous marriage, seven-year-old Roger Hill and five-year-old Kathy Hill, and the couple’s two younger children, two-year-old Linda and seven-month-old Robert.
After carrying out the murders, James D. Burgan then used the same rifle to take his own life. When police arrived at the home, they found a scene of unimaginable sorrow. Joyce's body was discovered in the bathroom. The bodies of the children and Mrs. Nolan were found in various other locations throughout the house. James Burgan was found deceased in a chair near a telephone.
Due to the murder-suicide nature of the event, there were no arrests made in connection with the deaths of Joyce Marie Driver Burgan and the other victims. The case was closed with the identification of James D. Burgan as the sole perpetrator.
