In the early hours of April 10, 2002, a tragic event unfolded in Detroit, Michigan, that cut short the life of 8-year-old Brianna Caddell. While sleeping in her first-floor bedroom on Cardoni Street, the young girl became the unintended victim of a violent act. The home she shared with her mother and five siblings was riddled with more than two dozen bullets fired from an assault rifle.
Brianna was struck in the arm and chest and was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local children's hospital.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a heartbreaking story of mistaken identity and misdirected revenge. Authorities identified two men, 26-year-old Antoine Foote and 23-year-old Karis Hampton, as the individuals responsible for the fatal shooting. It was discovered that Foote had been feuding with a man he believed was at the residence, though the intended target did not live there. Foote’s alleged motive was to avenge the death of his brother, who had been killed in a dispute over drug territory months prior.
Both Foote and Hampton were arrested and faced serious charges for their roles in the death of Brianna Caddell. Foote was charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, and two firearm counts. Hampton faced charges of first-degree murder, four counts of assault with intent to murder, and conspiracy to commit murder. Following a preliminary examination where Brianna's mother tearfully recounted the events of that horrific night, a judge ordered both men to stand trial for the senseless killing.
