Charles E. Beasley, a 38-year-old Detroit police officer, was shot and killed on Tuesday, November 22, 1988, in a tragic turn of events during an undercover narcotics operation. A 12-year veteran of the police force, Beasley was a married father of three.
The fatal encounter took place in the parking lot of a White Castle restaurant at the intersection of Livernois and West Warren in Detroit.
Officer Beasley was in the process of a pre-arranged 'buy,' intending to purchase a significant quantity of narcotics for $25,000 as part of an undercover investigation. Unbeknownst to him, the supposed drug dealers had no intention of completing the transaction and had instead planned to rob him of the substantial sum of money. The narcotics they presented were counterfeit, reportedly consisting of flour.
When the suspects attempted to take the money, Officer Beasley resisted, leading to a violent confrontation. The situation escalated rapidly, and one of the suspects, sensing that they might be entangled in a police sting, fired a weapon, striking Officer Beasley in the face. The gunshot proved to be fatal, and he died at the scene of the transaction.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Officer Beasley's partners, who were also part of the undercover operation and positioned nearby, responded swiftly. They engaged the assailant, and in the ensuing exchange, the gunman was shot in the thigh. The wounded suspect attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by the other officers. His arrest marked the beginning of the legal proceedings that would follow the death of Officer Beasley.
