In a tragic turn of events that stemmed from domestic turmoil, 38-year-old Rhonda Lynne Bucholtz of Port Hope, Michigan, was found dead on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, in a motel room in Mason. The grim discovery was made by Mason police during a welfare check at the Heb's Inn & Motel. The investigation into her death quickly unraveled a story of abduction and murder at the hands of her estranged husband, 58-year-old Gary Earl Bucholtz, a former police chief of Bad Axe.

Rhonda's safety had been mounting among family members due to ongoing marital difficulties between the couple. These fears tragically materialized when family reported them missing after they hadn't been heard from since the evening of November 28, 2011. The investigation that followed revealed a harrowing sequence of events. Evidence suggests that a struggle took place at Gary Bucholtz's home in Port Hope, after which he abducted Rhonda against her will. It is believed that he used restraints to secure her before driving her approximately 110 miles to the motel in Mason.
Inside the motel room, investigators found a grim scene. Rhonda Bucholtz had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her face. Her husband, Gary, was also deceased, having died from a single self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. The discovery of various 'implements of restraint' both in the couple's vehicle and within the motel room further solidified the police theory of an abduction followed by a murder-suicide. An ankle restraint was found still secured to one of Rhonda's legs.
The Mason Police Department, in conjunction with the Huron County Sheriff's Office, handled the investigation.
