Robbin Brown, a 20-year-old woman from Detroit, Michigan, was found dead on April 10, 2000, left in a railroad-yard landscape in southwest Detroit near the Conrail tracks—one of several bodies that made the city feel, for a moment, like it was holding its breath. Investigators would later describe the victims in that cluster as sex workers who had been strangled, their bodies positioned to be discovered, as if the killer wanted the world to look straight at what he had done.
