On a Monday morning in Detroit, Michigan, a young woman named Ciera Wells, aged 20, was driving with her mother and 11-year-old sister on an errand to buy fruit. As they traveled down Maddelein Street on March 21, 2022, the sound of multiple gunshots suddenly pierced the air. In the driver's seat, Ciera cried out to her mother that she had been shot.
The single gunshot wound to her back caused Ciera to lose control of the vehicle, which then crashed into a tree.
When Detroit police officers arrived at the scene around 11:29 a.m., they found her unresponsive. Ciera was rushed to a local hospital, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. The tragic event occurred just one day after she had celebrated her 20th birthday.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a case of mistaken identity. Authorities alleged that the shooter had been targeting a vehicle of a similar make and color to the one Ciera was driving in an act of retribution for a prior incident. Later that same day, police arrested 19-year-old Marion Johnson in connection with the fatal shooting.
Marion Johnson was subsequently charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, and three counts of felony firearm. He was arraigned and remanded to jail to await further legal proceedings, including a probable cause conference and a preliminary examination scheduled for April of 2022.
