In the winter of 2016, the life of 25-year-old Jaquan Jamal White, a Black / African American male, was cut tragically short in the small community of Suttons Bay, Michigan. On January 11th, emergency services responded to a call at a residence in the 300 block of a local street, where they found White with a single gunshot wound to the head. The weapon involved was a rifle that belonged to him.
Initial suspicions surrounding the circumstances of the shooting prompted an investigation by
the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office. However, as detectives delved deeper into the events of that day, the evidence began to point away from foul play and towards a heartbreaking accident. It was determined that White had been handling the loaded firearm, which he owned, while under the influence of alcohol. Investigators learned that prior to the fatal discharge, White had been engaged in horseplay with children at the home.
While no suspects were identified and no arrests were made in direct relation to Jaquan Jamal White's death, the investigation did lead to legal consequences for the 31-year-old woman who resided at the home where the incident occurred. During their investigation, authorities discovered cocaine and marijuana at the scene. Subsequently, the woman was arrested and charged with maintaining a drug house, a high-court misdemeanor.
The Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies concluded that the shooting was accidental, bringing a somber closure to the investigation. The tragic event left the community saddened and served as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of handling firearms, particularly when judgment is impaired.
