On the evening of October 13, 2023, a day that should have been filled with joy and celebration, 17-year-old Franklin De Jesus, a male resident of Grand Rapids, was fatally shot. The teenager was at the Delta Hotel in Kentwood, Michigan, celebrating his birthday when the tragic incident occurred. Known for his cheerful disposition and strong work ethic, particularly by his manager at Culver's where he was employed, his sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through his community.
Kentwood Police Department officers were dispatched to the hotel at approximately 10:15 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered De Jesus inside a hotel room with gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The news of his death prompted an outpouring of grief from family and friends, who gathered for a vigil to mourn their loss and seek answers about the senseless act of violence that cut his young life short.
In the days that followed the shooting, the Kentwood Police Department made an arrest in connection with the case.
