In the spring of 2016, the life of 27-year-old Ben Allen Johnson, a male resident of Jackson, Michigan, was tragically cut short. On the evening of May 8th, Johnson was found inside a vehicle on High Street, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The circumstances of his death would soon unravel a story of domestic turmoil that ended in violence.
Responding to the scene, law enforcement officers initiated an investigation that quickly pointed to a person known to Johnson.
The focus of the inquiry soon centered on his 36-year-old girlfriend, Shalonda Kay-Ann Brown. Evidence gathered by detectives suggested a heated argument between the couple had preceded the deadly shooting. This altercation reportedly escalated to a physical confrontation before the fatal shot was fired.
Within a short period, Shalonda Brown was taken into custody by the Jackson Police Department. She was formally charged with one count of open murder and one count of felony firearm in connection with Ben Allen Johnson's death. During legal proceedings that followed, a judge determined there was sufficient evidence to order Brown to stand trial for the charges brought against her. Prosecutors later offered Brown a plea agreement, which would have required her to plead guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder, but she chose to reject the offer, maintaining her plea of not guilty.
